Crossbody Strap - Thermal Stitch Crochet Pattern

bag strap.jpg

I've been crocheting bags for a while now and tried so many ways to crochet a nice and sturdy strap for my bags. I never liked the single crochet stitch strap because it stretches so much. I found this Thermal Crochet Stitch at Pinterest from a potholder pattern. I like that it's thick and decided to try to make it into a strap. And I love it. It does stretches a little bit -- I guess it's normal when it comes to crochet -- and it also depends on how heavy your bag is. But I prefer this method than any crochet stitch I've tried.

Here are some of the suggested materials to make this strap and I will show you how to use them.

Snap Hooks with D rings, 1” width available at Amazon for $9.99.

You get 30 pcs of the snap hooks and 30 pcs of the D rings.

I got a quick video tutorial for this strap. Check it out and please subscribe. More patterns coming!

1. Snap Hooks

I will be using Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn (these are the yarns I use to most of my crochet bags) with crochet hook H/8 (5.0mm)

We usually start with a chain foundation. But here, the snap hook is our foundation. Start with 6 sc and crochet it over the snap hook. Make 2 more rows of sc stitch.

We're going to pick up the back loop of the first sc stitch and the bottom loop of the previous sc row at the same time. Yarn over  and pull through the two loops like a normal sc stitch.

This part is always tricky and as a tip, I use my nail to help push my hook through the bottom loop. It'll be easier after this row.

Turn your work and always start with a sc stitch.  This time, the bottom loop is more visible and easy to get to. Pick up the back loop of the first sc stitch and the bottom loop of the previous row. Yarn over through the two loops and finish off your sc stitch. Keep turning over and repeat this process until your desired strap length.

Once you've reached your desired length, to finish off your thermal stitch, pick both the front loop, back loop (like a normal sc stitch) and the bottom loop at the same time. Yarn over the three loops and finish off your sc stitch. This will close out your strap.

Make a row of regular sc stitch. Get your other snap hook and place it to top of your strap. Crochet over it and a final 6 sc stitch. Finish off and weave the end with your darning needle to secure your hook.

2. Split Key Rings

Another way is to use a key ring or d rings and crochet them on the side of your bag. Then do the small process of crocheting over the ring and continue and finish it off to the other side of the bag where the other ring is waiting.

3. Do it directly to the bag

If you do not want to spend the any money for the rings, you can crochet the strap directly to the bag. Just start of with the sic crochet stitch using your bag as your foundation.
